Set up a repo's environment and Knowledge
The tests fail on a fresh clone and the README says almost nothing. Devin works out which services and environment variables the repo needs and saves them as an environment blueprint and Knowledge for later sessions.
Steps
- Enter your GitHub user or org. The links and the prompt on this page use it.
- Create your own copy of the starter repo. Open GitHub's new-repository page for devin-demo-cold-repo-onboarding, choose your account as the owner, keep the name
devin-demo-cold-repo-onboarding, and click Create repository. - Make sure Devin can access the new repo under Settings → Connections → GitHub.
- Start a session at app.devin.ai and paste the prompt below.
Prompt
Onboard yourself to https://github.com/<you>/devin-demo-cold-repo-onboarding like a new engineer on day one.
First, try to run the tests cold and show me exactly what fails. Then figure out what this repo really needs (Postgres, Redis, migrations, seed data, required env vars like DATABASE_URL / REDIS_URL / LEDGER_SIGNING_KEY) and make it reproducible: write a repo-level environment blueprint so future sessions boot with services running and deps installed, and add Knowledge/Memory notes for the non-obvious rules of this codebase (how postings must balance, how to run migrations, where config lives). Finish by proving a fresh setup goes from clone to green tests with one command, and list everything you saved so the next engineer (or Devin) starts productive in seconds. What to watch
- It shows you exactly what fails cold.
- It asks for approval before changing the environment blueprint or saving org Knowledge. Watch for those cards.
You're done when
- A fresh session goes from clone to green tests with one command.
- Devin lists everything it saved.
